چکیده

Quasielastic neutron scattering experiments were performed with Na-hectorite, Ni-hectorite, and Sm-hectorite samples in order to find out whether Sm is present in the clay interlayer as a fully hydrated cation (outer-sphere complex), or, as it follows from neutron diffraction data analysis, it is dehydrated and bound to the clay surface (inner-sphere complex). The results obtained for the Sm-hectorite were compared with other interlayer cations: strongly hydrated Ni and relatively weakly hydrated Na+. It was found that water mobility in the Sm-hectorite sample is very close to the water mobility in Ni-hectorite. This is only possible if the Sm ion is fully hydrated. It was shown that water molecules hydrating Ni and Sm exhibit diffusion in su -0 04 13 84 7, v er si on 1 9 Se p 20 09 Author manuscript, published in "The Journal of Physical Chemistry C 113 (2009) 13801-13812" DOI : 10.1021/jp903179g

Hydration of cement: The application of quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering

Quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering have been highlighted as excellent tools for studying the hydration of cement components. Here, the complimentary application of inelastic and time-resolved quasielastic neutron scattering to investigate the reaction kinetics during the crucial first 24 h of hydration will be highlighted. Some recent results include the interaction of tricalcium and...

Quasielastic and inelastic neutron scattering study of the hydration of monoclinic and triclinic tricalcium silicate

The hydration of Mg-stabilized triclinic and monoclinic tricalcium silicate samples were studied using quasielastic neutron scattering to follow the fixation of hydrogen into the reaction products and by applying hydration models to the data. The quantity of Ca(OH)2 produced during hydration was also determined using inelastic neutron scattering. The monoclinic form was found to be intrinsicall...

Internal molecular motions of bacteriorhodopsin: hydration-induced flexibility studied by quasielastic incoherent neutron scattering using oriented purple membranes.

Quasielastic incoherent neutron scattering from hydrogen atoms, which are distributed nearly homogeneously in biological molecules, allows the investigation of diffusive motions occurring on the pico- to nanosecond time scale. A quasielastic incoherent neutron scattering study was performed on the integral membrane protein bacteriorhodopsin (BR), which is a light-driven proton pump in Halobacte...

Inelastic neutron scattering investigation of hydrating tricalcium and dicalcium silicate mixture pastes: Ca(OH)2 formation and evolution of strength

The hydration of controlled tricalcium and dicalcium silicate mixtures was investigated using inelastic neutron scattering. The amount of Ca(OH)2 produced by each mixture was quantified based on the vibrational mode at approximately 41 meV. The results of compressive strength testing correlate with the amount of Ca(OH)2 produced and with previous results from quasielastic neutron scattering. Th...

Difference in the hydration water mobility around F-actin and myosin subfragment-1 studied by quasielastic neutron scattering

Hydration water is essential for a protein to perform its biological function properly. In this study, the dynamics of hydration water around F-actin and myosin subfragment-1 (S1), which are the partner proteins playing a major role in various cellular functions related to cell motility including muscle contraction, was characterized by incoherent quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS). The QEN...
